train while sick

Train While Sick? Is it Good or Harmful?

This is a common question many of my clients ask me, “Should we train while sick?” Can we skip one or two days of training when we’re sick? People have mixed opinions on this topic. I still remember when I first hit the gym, one of my seniors called me a sissy for skipping the gym because of fever. Maybe you have faced all these too.

Don’t worry, this article is going to clear all your doubts regarding whether we should train while sick or not. So make sure you read till the end.

Is it Okay to Train While Sick?

I will clear this doubt quickly and clearly.

IT IS NOT OKAY TO TRAIN WHEN WE ARE SICK!

It is definitely not okay to lift those heavy dumbbells and barbells when we are sick or suffering from fever. I know many people in the gym are critical on this subject. They might call you sissy, girly, or too tender but make sure you ignore them. They are just ill-informed.

When you’re running a fever, i.e., body temperature above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, make sure you take proper rest. Exercise only when you’ve fully recovered, i.e., after 3-4 days.

Sickness and fever is the sign your body needs rest. Don’t overexert it or it may cause injury and the fever will persist.

What Should You Do When You’re Sick?

When you’re sick, or suffering from fever, sore throat, headache, etc., the wisest thing you can do is take some rest! It’s time you forget about the gym or gym diet. Lay down on the bed and take proper rest until the fever goes.

Training at this stage may result in muscle injury, fatigue, or even some severe health problems. I’d also suggest you to take a break from your regular gym diet. If you’ve been taking some dietary supplements, whey protein, or something similar, stop that until you recover.

Your body’s metabolism drops when you’re sick and you need rest and sleep to recover fast.

Stopping dairy products, salt, or egg yolk can also help in faster recovery.

What Should We Eat for Faster Recovery While Sick?

We’ve already discussed that you should avoid spicy or high protein foods when you’re sick. So what should you eat?

Go for natural homemade food items during this time. Foods that are low in spices and oil are good. You can try brown rice, chapatti, dal sabzi, roti, salad, chicken stew, etc.

Consuming honey and lemon tea is also good to consume during this time. You can read this special article on the wonderful benefits of Honey and Lemon.

Staying Hydrated is the Key to Recover Quicker!

Drinking lots of water is quintessential during the sickness. You might have noticed that we tend to drink less water when we are sick. The cough in our system or the sore throat makes water tasteless and very difficult to drink.

Make sure you don’t fall in that trap. Drinking less water can make the sickness prolong and make you weaker. Your urine will turn yellow, and you’ll go weak.

Drinking water while sick is necessary because we take medicines when we are sick. The toxins in our body need something to flush out properly. So make sure you don’t forget this very important tip for faster recovery.

So that’s it Folks!

So that was it guys. I hope this article cleared every doubt on whether we should train while sick or not. Make sure you take proper rest when you’re sick and take at least 3-4 days rest.

That rest is actually good for your body and help you recover faster. And before you leave, I recommend reading this article on GYM DIET CHART FOR HARD GAINERS!
